Bruce A. Deerson
Bruce Deerson brings more than 25 years of experience
in litigation, business law, and negotiation to the mediation process.
As Vice President & General Counsel of Martin Marietta
Materials, Inc., a NYSE company, Mr. Deerson was a member of the
senior management team that took the company public and grew the
company’s sales by more than fourfold to $ 1.5 billion. Much of that
growth in sales took place through acquisitions. Martin Marietta
operates a materials business, a chemicals business and certain
high-tech businesses.
In negotiating acquisitions, as well as hundreds of
other transactions, with both large and small companies and
individuals, Mr. Deerson worked hard to create an atmosphere of trust
and problem–solving, rather than one of win-lose.

Mr. Deerson’s work at Martin Marietta extended well
beyond negotiating contractual relationships. He advised management
and worked on the entire spectrum of legal issues that arise in a
business context. He managed hundreds of lawsuits for the company, and
applied both business understanding and legal analysis to strategic
decision-making in those cases.
In addition to serving as General Counsel, Mr. Deerson
served as Corporate Secretary, and also served on the Boards of
Directors of all corporate subsidiaries and on the Committee
responsible for overseeing the corporation’s ERISA plans.
Prior to joining Martin Marietta, Mr. Deerson worked at
a litigation firm and served as law clerk to a United States District
Court Judge. As a result, he brings law-firm experience and a
judicial-branch perspective to mediation. In addition, he has taught
college-level courses in Business Law.
Mr. Deerson is a Certified Mediator in the State of
North Carolina, and is a member of the Commercial Panel of Arbitrators
of the American Arbitration Association.
He received his BA from The Johns Hopkins University,
and his JD, with Honors, from George Washington University Law School.
He has studied Mediation at Duke University.
